There is no better way to support the Preserve than to join the Friends of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve, a non-profit organization that supports the Preserve in myriad ways: through volunteering, fundraising, stewardship projects, publications, and interpretive programs.

We urge everyone to consider joining the Friends.

Mission of the Friends

The Friends of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve is a non-profit organization that serves as an advocate for the active stewardship of the Preserve.  The Friends works to ensure the integrity of the Preserve by recommending appropriate policies and guidelines, by collaborating in stewardship activities and by fostering concern about the impact of contiguous development.  It aims to preserve, protect, and nurture the Preserve through the vicissitudes of time.

The Friends of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve:

  • encourages appropriate and constructive use of the Preserve,
  • brings to the university's Preserve Committee the views and concerns of the Friends Board and membership,
  • communicates university policies and recommendations concerning the Preserve to its membership and the broader community,
  • offers the experience and expertise of its membership,
  • provides a long-term continuity which seeks to protect the Preserve through changing committee memberships and university administrations,
  • seeks a cooperative working relationship with the university's Preserve Committee,
  • supports the use of the Preserve as a learning environment,
  • recruits volunteers for stewardship activities, and
  • raises funds to assist in carrying out the mutual goals of the Friends and the Preserve Committee.

We repeat: there is no better way to support the Preserve than to join the Friends of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve, and we urge everyone to do so. You can learn how to join the Friends by visiting their website at http://waa.uwalumni.com/lakeshorepreserve/.
